Stucco is a form of plaster made by mixing an aggregate, a jointing compound, and water. Used by the ancient Greeks, Romans and Arabs, this ornament and surface protection is still popular today in many parts of the world. Its composition and methods for implementation have not even changed a lot.
The ingredients have traditionally been mixed on site and must be applied while wet. It is usually placed in several layers, although some of the newer synthetic stucco guarantee a single layer of coverage. When completely dry, a layer is hard and durable. The mixture adheres to masonry, including stone, adobe, brick, concrete and cement blocks. Wooden structure requires a moisture barrier (usually asphalt impregnated paper) and a net or wire mesh to hold the plaster. The last layer (three is typical) can be smooth as marble, floating to bring sand to the surface to give a uniform texture, or swirling patterns.
Today the Portland cement is used to keep sand and water. It gives a greater degree of hardness and weatherability of the original lime. Lime is soluble in water, and mix the traditional buildings finally collapsed. However, the lime is what is called "self-healing properties. A small part of the lime softening in case of rain, seal the tiny cracks caused by structural solution or extreme temperatures, and then harden again. That is one reason why lime is often added to blends containing cement.
Traditional stucco is better suited to hot, dry climates, where its components are not subject to frequent rains and where the freshness of the thick walls would be appreciated. Maintenance is very minimal with modern types of this material. Pigments are usually added to the mix, so the color is not just on the surface, and stuccoed walls need painting. Periodic inspections for cracks and chips and wash once in a while is about all that is required in most cases.
Although most of this type of finish is in place, there is synthetic panels in factories and shipped to construction sites where they are installed in place as plywood sheets. These panels of the most modern acrylic fibers may also contain animal anachronistic touch that gives strength to the composition.
